Species Information

Summary:
Tricholoma albobrunneum is in the T. pessundatum group (robust, viscid, reddish-brown species with reddish-spotted gills) but according to Arora(1) it is said to have a weaker odor and a cap finely streaked with darker lines. Hansen gives T. striatum (Schaeff.) Sacc. sensu Lange as a synonym and Moser gives T. striatum (Schaeff.) Quel. as a synonym.

The University of British Columbia has collections from BC. The University of Washington has collections from WA and OR, and Oregon State University also has collections from OR. According to D. Miller, pers. comm., preliminary DNA sequencing suggests the presence of T. albobrunneum or something close in the Pacific Northwest.
Cap:
5-8cm across, bell-shaped to umbonate; dark red brown; fibrillose to striate, developing small scales, (Hansen), 5-6(7)cm across, weakly conic-blunt or slightly shield-shaped; red brown; finely appressed-fibrous, greasy, (Moser), cap margin obscurely striate (Leuthy), finely streaked with darker lines (Arora)
Gills:
white, becoming red brownish when old, (Moser)
Stem:
3-6cm x 0.5-1.5cm, brown, +/- brown fibrillose below, top whitish, without distinct border, (Hansen), whitish when young, becoming reddish brown, darker in lower part; somewhat scaly, (Moser), stem apex clearly delimited by a pseudoannular white zone, (Leuthy)
Odor:
farinaceous (Hansen), weakly flour-like (Moser)
Taste:
farinaceous with slightly bitter aftertaste (Hansen)
Microscopic spores:
spores 4.5-6 x 2.5-3.5 microns (Hansen), spores about 5 x 3 microns, (Moser), [presumably smooth, inamyloid]
Spore deposit:
[presumably whitish]

Habitat / Range

in sandy Pinus (pine) forests (Hansen for Europe), especially with pines (Moser for Europe)
